Topaz has been esteemed since the Middle Ages, when wine-yellow crystals were mined in the Erzgebirge mountains in East Germany. Some say its name is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “fire.” Others link it to the Red Sea Island of Topazios (Zabargad or St. John’s Island), where peridot has been found. Available in a variety of strikingly rich colors, Topaz has long been considered an amulet to protect the wearer from harm and has the ability to increase the strength of the wearer.
