Just as wood furniture needs to be lacquered,
most type of gemstones are treated in some way or the other to enhance
their appearance, durability, or color before they are offered on
the market.

Gemstone color grading is somewhat more difficult
than clarity, as the standard grading method is used in grading both
colorless gemstones (e.g. diamond and silver topaz) as well as colored
gemstones (e.g. ruby and emerald).

Clarity is the term used to describe the
internal quality and the presence of identifying characteristics
on and within a stone. Inclusions are characteristics which are entirely
inside a stone or that extend into it from the surface.

Cutting style refers to the way in which
a gemstone is cut or faceted. Gemstone cutting is based on science.
Each gem material has a known refractive index which allows a gem
cutter to determine how light rays will bend as they pass through
the stone.

As the weight of a gem increases, so does
its price per carat – per carat cost of a stone can be calculated
by dividing stone cost by carat weight. Large gems are always rarer
than smaller ones, so per carat prices rise exponentially.
